Powerleague
The largest operator of five-a-side football venues and events across the UK & Netherlands
Plug & Play designed and built this large and complex omnichannel experience, with deep integrations with internal platforms, POS systems and a range of other systems.
The UK's largest sports pitch booking platform, operating across B2B and B2C, handling millions of pounds in bookings across football pitches, courts, venue hire and events needed a new infrastructure to support its scale, a unified omni-channel experience and a booking engine to manage millions of possible venue, pitch and time-slot combinations securely, across multiple territories and languages.
With a number of complex user journeys already running across its digital ecosystem, Powerleague challenged Plug & Play to overhaul that experience end-to-end - improving usability and unlocking new revenue.
Following a technical review, Plug & Play selected a headless architecture for the project: WordPress as the content layer, a custom backend booking system as the data engine, and an API layer connecting both to whatever front-end needed to consume them.
That decoupling meant the website and, later, the native mobile app could both be built against the same booking data without duplicating logic or risking drift between platforms, the foundation for treating web and app as one ecosystem rather than two separate builds.
Plug & Play delivered Powerleague's omni-channel digital transformation end to end, with the mobile app as one deliberate piece of that wider strategy.
Website and app share one design ecosystem, so the Powerleague brand feels the same everywhere a customer meets it, while each platform still leans into what it does best, from the app's on-the-go bookings to the website's role as Powerleague's primary acquisition channel.
As part of Powerleague's wider digital transformation program Plug & Play were engaged to design and build the website and the front-end of the booking system.
Two legacy websites were consolidated into a single platform, with a mega-menu unifying content that had previously lived on separate domains.
The companion mobile app, built in React Native for iOS and Android, draws on the same booking engine as the website but was designed as its own product.
A dedicated design research phase studied complex booking experiences across travel, hospitality and entertainment to simplify onboarding and booking into as few taps as possible, fewer clicks, and a calendar booking flow built specifically for mobile. Solving the core problem of presenting large volumes of venue, pricing and availability data intuitively on a small screen.
Beyond matching the website, the app carries features exclusive to it: a Football League section, and a Player Marketplace where teams post listings, players apply, and teams manage applications and rate performance, and a loyalty benefits scheme that rewards regular bookers directly inside the app.
Together, those app-only features do a job the website can't, turning the app into a community tool as well as a booking one.
A single, scalable platform replacing two disconnected websites, built to handle Powerleague's full booking volume securely across markets and languages, plus a mobile app, together representing Powerleague's full omni-channel digital transformation.
That consistency extends Powerleague's reach across new territories and languages, opens new revenue through in-app loyalty and transfer market engagement alongside split-payment team bookings, and gives customers a reason to open the app between bookings rather than only when it's time to book a pitch.
